App is short for application. A mobile app is a computer generated program designed and developed to run on iPhone, Smartphones, tablets, and many other mobile devices. 

 

Mobile research goes back to the 1950s. In 1973, Martin Cooper of Motorola had a breakthrough. In the early 1990s, PDA's (palmtop computer) had what would be considered apps such as a word processor, spreadsheet, and database. The touchscreen Palm Pilot came shortly after. As for mobile phone devices, the first apps were a calculator, monthly calendar, world clock, Java games, and contact book. Then in 2002, the BlackBerry Smartphone released and integrated wireless email. In addition, it took ten hours of charging the battery to get 30 minutes to make calls and you could only call people in your area. Needless to say, we have come a long way.
