Cocktails in Film
You can find a lot more cocktails in film on my Facebook Group “Cocktails in Media.” If you’re looking for something specific then use the group search bar. Cheers!
I have been collecting cocktails seen in films since the 1980s. Around 1933, two things coincided; The end of Prohibition and Hollywood releasing “talkies” (films where you could hear the actors speak). Greta Garbo was a huge silent film star in the 1920s and made her talkie film switch in 1930. Her fans were very excited to hear her voice for the first time, and the marketing team stoked the fire by advertising the event with the catchphrase, “Garbo Talks!” Moreover, what were her first words, you ask? “Gimme a whiskey, ginger ale on the side.”
It’s informative to know that the first time women were allowed into the main room of bars (and not just the small “Ladies’ Bar” for prominent women) was the 1920s during Prohibition. Before then, a woman was only allowed in the main bar if she was a prostitute or madam. Therefore, most American women’s first bar experience was in illegal, secretive bars between the years 1920 and 1933. The combination of American women being allowed to drink socially and Hollywood’s advanced technology created a glamorization of the cocktail.
During the silent film era, there were plenty of imbibing scenes, particularly in Charlie Chaplin films. During American Prohibition, drinking scenes were simply set in countries that were not in Prohibition. A Horse’s Neck is ordered in the 1914 film Caught in a Cabaret, a Whiskey and Soda is made in the 1917 film The Idle Class, and Manhattans are drunk in the 1928 film Manhattan.
One thirty-second film should be mentioned. It was an advertisement film titled DeWar’s—It’s Scotch, and was projected on a wall in New York City’s Herald Square in 1898. It is the first spirit commercial to appear on film.
Cocktails in Film from the 1930s to the 2010s

There are a plethora of films filled to the brim with champagne, beer, wine, and drinking scenes, and you can see more of those films at William T. Brando: Dulce de Leche. Dulce is the Spanish word for “sweet.” De means “of,” and leche means “milk.” Sweet of milk.
Simmons: Don’t they serve it plain?
Brando: Well, only in the mornings. It has to do with the heat. At night, they put a kind of preservative in it.
Simmons: That’s interesting. What do they use?
Brando: Bacardi.
Simmons: Doesn’t that have alcohol in it?
Brando: Well, just enough to keep the milk from turning sour.
When Simmons is on her second drink, she says, “It’s so delicious. That Bacardi flavoring certainly makes a difference. You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk.”

Ewell: Gin and soda?
Monroe: That’s wrong. How do you drink gin?
Ewell: There’s gin and tonic and gin and vermouth, that’s a Martini.
Monroe: That sounds cool. I’ll have a glass of that. A big, tall one.
Ewell: Big, tall Martini. (He gets her one.) Well, here you are. Big, tall Martini.
Monroe: Thanks.
Ewell: You’re welcome.
Monroe: Very good. Maybe it needs a bit more sugar.
Ewell: I’d strongly advise against putting sugar in a Martini.
Monroe: You would? Why?
Ewell: Well . . . Take my word for it. No sugar in a Martini.
Monroe: Back home they put sugar in Martinis.
Ewell: Back home? Where?
Monroe: Denver, Colorado.

1958
Auntie Mame
The film's second scene is a cocktail party, and Auntie Mame (Rosalind Russell) descends the stairs talking about how someone is on their way with a gallon of gin. This is because the film begins in the Prohibition year of 1928 (about twenty years), and many cocktails are seen.
The morning after the party, Mame asks her nephew, Patrick, to tell the butler to bring her a light breakfast of black coffee and a Sidecar. Patrick is only twelve years old and makes a Martini for a visiting guest. He asks the guest if he would like it dry or extra dry. There is a complete scene of Patrick (Jan Handzlik) pouring the gin in a glass pitcher and educating the man: “Stir, never shake—it bruises the gin.” Patrick then swirls vermouth around inside a Martini glass, pours it out, and then pours the stirred gin into the glass. He serves it without an olive but asks: “Would you like an olive? Auntie Mame says it takes up too much room in the drink.”
Other drinks seen and mentioned in the film include Mint Juleps, Drambuie, and Cognac. There is also a scene where Mame serves a specialty cocktail called “the Flaming Mame,” served in a large, stemmed, conical-shaped metal glass with the drink lit on fire. It is a joke that she plays on her guests to pay them back for serving her bad cocktails at their house.
